This may seem awkward to read, but it's What Is Art?, Anna Karenina, War and Peace, The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories, and Hadji Murat are the Tolstoy writings the pair have translated. This is about Pevear and Volokhonsky who translate Russian literature into English. And here is the more recent translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (2000): anna-karenina-pevear. I've just checked my copy of Anna Karenina and it's by Pevear and Volokhonsky. They are a husband and wife team. I did read the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation of Anna Karenina a few years ago; and whilst I can understand and subscribe to the Lingua Franca view of it, I'm not sure that the more literal translation hampered my enjoyment. Anna Karenina–the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation–was one of the seven or so novels (Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov included) that I read last semester for an Honors Russian Lit class. When Pevear and Volokhonsky translated it, they kept the French with the English translation as a footnote. I learned that there are 3 major translations: constance garnett, lousie and aylmer maude, and richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel.
